Golden Oldies in Edinburgh Scotland

The Golden Oldies Edinburgh tour is fast approaching with a full roster enabling us to enter two teams.

Time to get those kilts and accoutrements ordered for Scotland.

Our illustrious Board of Governors, under the sterling leadership of our Pooh-Bah, have selected a tartan which well depicts the color of the Texas Bluebonnet - THE NEW SCOTLAND TARTAN.

The ODs and AdCs have been selected... for full details of the tour info click on the topics below...

Suggested Dress for the Parade of Nations down the Royal Mile & the Grand Finale Dinner

We have lots of options here; and of course, you should wear whatever you’re comfortable with.  However, in an effort to look somewhat unified; we are suggesting the following for two of the major events-

Parade of Nations - A Texas flag shirt.  They are available many places and are fairly inexpensive.  They are offered in long sleeve, short sleeve, polo and tee.   Below the waist; anything goes, decide for yourself.  We encourage the XXXs kilt, shorts, boots, sporrans, sashes, spurs, Stetsons etc…

Grand Finale Dinner - A sport jacket with a Texas XXXs rose patch, and again, anything goes below the waist; kilt, pants, boots, sporrans, sashes, spurs, with cowboy hats, etc… etc…

Hotel - Our hotel is the Hilton Grosvenor, you can check it out at http://www.hilton.co.uk/edinburghgrosvenor

Tour Itinerary - Detailed information regarding the tour including the schedule and description of events and parties can be found at… http://www.goldenoldiessports.com/go_festivals/rugby_festivals/default.htm

Passports - Please make sure you have a passport and that it will be current in September, if not, remember that it can take a longer than it use to renew your passport or get a new one. You may want to do it now.

Officers of the Day & Aides de Camp  -  You May Be the OD, But It’s Better Than Being DOA

Being the Pooh-Bah may be the greatest job in the world – except for all the stupid questions and the stupid "yah awta..." suggestions one gets on tour.  “What time is the bus coming?”  “Who do we play?”  “What do we wear?”  “Where are we eating?”  "Are we there yet?" “What time is curfew?”  “Why did I get fined for mentioning him?”

To give a little relief to the Pooh-Bah & tour organizers, so that they may have time to also enjoy the trip, the Board of Governors has approved a positively inspired concept of delegating to lieutenants these daily responsibilities.  These gents (and/or ladies) will be known as the “Officer of the Day” and will be charged with planning, organizing and executing all the details of the trip for their one day of the tour.  Each OD will receive a cherished emblem of office to be worn at all times that day, and he/she will be assigned an Aide-de-Camp to assist with their duties. While the ODs are experienced XXXs tourists familiar with the GORT format, the AdCs are rookies enabling them to learn at the knees of their ODs in preparation for their possible promotion to OD on the next tour.

However, past ODs have been carried away by the responsibility providing gag gifts and party treats to everyone on tour at their own expense. We would like to seriously discourage this practice since it was not the original intention and can become quite expensive. We would like to limit the participation as OD to responsibly organizing the group and finding fun local activities so that everyone is on time, knows what’s going on and has a good time.

In keeping with XXXs tradition, this is a “calling” – it is an honor that cannot be refused.  The list of OD’s was revealed to us in a mystical tribal meeting, emerging from the smoky haze of fine imported seegars, complemented by the waft of the bouquet of Miller light.

Here, then, are the few, the chosen … the screwed...

But wait, there’s more!  Just because you are not on the list, do not think you’re “home free.”  It is inevitable that this list may change due to unforeseen circumstances (despite the fact that appointment to these positions cannot be refused), so the possibility still exists that you may be called upon to fill a role.  Also, spouses (or “special friends”) are very much encouraged to join in on the planning and execution, especially so that the distaff side will not be overlooked by a churlish, chauvinistic OD and his staff.
